Our affair with minerals began online. But after a few years of collecting, we decided to delve deeper into our love of minerals by visiting mineral shows. Although it wasn’t planned, we ended up visiting three Asian shows in a row— from Singapore, Hong Kong, to Japan. All in the same year!
In November, we flew to Hong Kong to visit our second mineral show. It was an impromptu trip— solely for a single specimen. For years, we have been searching for a good example from the prestigious Polish Prodigy Pocket to add to our personal collection. When we saw the one that was scheduled to be displayed at the 16th Hong Kong Mineral Fair, we fell in love immediately. Instead of shipping the beauty home, we decided to visit the show and collect our precious specimen in person.
Though the show was held in a small ballroom, there were mineral dealers not only from Hong Kong, but Guilin, Taiwan, France, Japan, South Africa, India and more.
Being obsessed with fluorites, we noticed that most of the fluorite specimens in the show were Chinese or British fluorites. As this year’s theme was “Namibian Minerals”, there were also several excellent N’Chwaning Rhodochrosite specimens and Okorusu fluorites on display.
So the next time you’re travelling to Hong Kong, it might be worth checking out their mineral show!
